The Temple of Dawn, or Wat Arun, is one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks, renowned for its stunning architectural beauty and serene riverfront setting. Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is distinguished by its central spire, or “prang,” which rises majestically to a height of 82 meters (269 feet). The prang is adorned with colorful porcelain tiles and seashells, creating a dazzling mosaic effect that glistens in the sunlight.
The temple’s design symbolizes Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology, with the central spire representing the axis of the world. Surrounding the prang are four smaller towers, each intricately decorated with similar porcelain embellishments.
Visitors can climb the steep steps of the central prang for a panoramic view of the river and the city. The temple is especially beautiful at sunrise, when the light reflects off its ornate surfaces, and during twilight, when it is illuminated by soft, golden lighting. Wat Arun is not only a significant religious site but also a masterpiece of Thai architecture and a symbol of Bangkok’s rich cultural heritage.
